How to

Up your home maintenance game with Resene products

Now is the time for home maintenance, which not only keeps things looking fresh but creates a safe and healthy living environment. Resene has you covered when it comes to clever products that help clean and protect your surfaces and substrates, both inside and out.

Refresh and renew

Resene Paint Prep and Housewash is a powerful and highly efficient way to get surfaces ready for painting or to use annually to give homes and buildings a refresh. A regular cleaning cycle will keep your house looking great and will extend the life of your paintwork. Dilute the cleaner with according to the instructions on the pack, hose the wall or surface to be cleaned then scrub vigorously using a nylon bristle broom or scrubbing brush, then rinse with plenty of clean water for an instantly fresher surface. Make sure you do all of this on an overcast day – if it’s too sunny the surface will dry too quickly and leave streaks on your house. The process is pretty much the same as cleaning your car – but without drying the surface with chamois or towel!

Deep impact

Resene Deep Clean is your saving grace when it comes to cleaning slippery paths, driveways, patios, decks and all of your exterior paintwork. It breaks down contaminants all by itself – once you’ve applied it, nature does the job for you. Use it twice a year on concrete and timber surfaces to keep them looking good. Dilute according to the product’s instructions, then spray it on. Over the next few days, mould and moss will turn an orange-reddish colour and the Deep Clean will continue to work over the coming months, The elements will take care of the rest.

Top tip: Try the easy to use Deep Clean ready-to-use pack for fast turnaround of large areas like driveways.

Resene Deep Clean is your saving grace when it comes to cleaning slippery paths, driveways, patios, decks and all of your exterior paintwork.
Busy households with children and pets will see the instant benefits of a quick wipe down with Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner.

So fresh so clean

Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner is an amazing interior all-rounder that blitzes marks and dirt in a flash. It won’t dull the colour of your paint and won’t form a film, meaning you don’t need to rinse the surface afterwards. Not only is it great for general home maintenance, it’s also the first step in any interior paint job to prepare the surface properly. Simply spray onto the surface and wipe with a damp cloth.

Break the mould

Kill all manner of green stuff with Resene Moss & Mould Killer. If left untreated on paint, mould can be a major cause of paint disfigurement and can shorten the life of your paintwork – plus it’s incredibly dangerous on decks and paths as it is so slippery. Saturate the whole area with a brush or garden sprayer, taking care to keep it off any plants. Then leave it for 4–6 hours hours before washing it off thoroughly.

Black mould is common inside homes with poor ventilation or even in newer homes if you leave all the windows shut. Mould can damage paintwork and the timber beneath it. Resene Moss & Mould Killer to the rescue once again – be sure to open the windows to avoid fumes. To prevent this problem long-term, consider painting windowsills with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom or Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom, which both contain anti-bacterial silver and Resene MoulDefender to prevent mould.

Resene Anti-Slip Grip Additive can be mixed into certain paint products and clear coatings to give your surfaces a non-slip finish.
For a pre-mixed non-slip product, try Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path tinted to your chosen colour.

Get a grip

To create a safer walking surface, mix Resene Anti-Slip Grip Additive into your paint when painting outdoor areas and stairs. It’s ideal to add to Resene Walk-on flooring and paving paint.

Note: It’s important to bear in mind that the grit, while providing a on-slip surface, will be harder to keep clean.

Pre-mixed grip

Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path has a textured finish that’s designed to provide a safe walking surface inside and out where a non-skid finish is desired, and it can be tinted to suit your aesthetic. The finish has a comfortable grit texture to give feet and shoes something to grip onto, reducing the risk of accidents no matter the weather. Some colours are also available in Resene CoolColour technology to reduce heat build-up. Rated five stars in the Consumer NZ test of anti-slip finishes.

Dry your tears

Condensation is a serious concern during winter in our part of the world, with the moisture accumulated in homes turning to mould on many surfaces. Unfortunately these mould spores can cause both minor and major health issues, as well as gradually destroying your home and possessions. Here are some tips to help keep moisture at bay:

  • Open doors and windows on fine days so air can circulate through your home.
  • Lift curtains and pull furniture back from the walls to create space for air circulation.
  • Ensure curtains extend right to the floor and that they include a separate thermal/blockout fabric layer, like those offered in the Resene Curtain Collection.
  • Air your mattresses and pillows in the sun to dry any residual moisture.
  • Ensure bathrooms and kitchens are well ventilated. Install extractor fans over cooktops and in bathrooms to remove steam. Use Resene SpaceCote Kitchen & Bathroom – available in flat or low sheen – which combines anti-bacterial silver protection and MoulDefender mould inhibitor.
  • Avoid drying clothes indoors and vent tumble dryers to outside.
  • Open windows or use an extractor fan in the bathroom when showering. Leave it on for 30 minutes afterwards with the door closed to remove moist air. Also make sure your extractor fans are venting to the outside of your home and not into the roof cavity!
  • Place draught stoppers beneath doors to keep rooms warm.
  • Wipe up any condensation on windows or sills straight away.
  • Periodically leave cupboard and wardrobe doors open so air can circulate. And never put damp shoes or clothes in a wardrobe.
