How to

4 ways to use Resene greens in your home

Greens are having a major moment in interiors, so much so that the term ‘millennial green’ has been coined to highlight the muted greens that have been prolifically used for decorating lately.

While it might be very on trend right now, using green has always been a great way to bring the colours of nature inside our homes and evoke a calming, soothing and energising vibe in our spaces. The need to do this was significantly bolstered during and after Covid, when our homes became our sanctuaries and places to work and create, as well as relax in.

Green is a relatively easy colour to use as the tones are so varied. Lighter hues are great for living rooms and bathrooms to promote a relaxing environment, while mid greens give a clean accent to kitchens and dining areas.

Here are some top tips for using green from the Resene Colour Choices book:

  • Clean, lime greens like Resene Conifer can be used as a feature wall or when colour-blocking. Nice and strong, they suit boys’ bedrooms and Asian-inspired schemes. Truer greens go well with the primary colours of red and yellow, as well as crisp whites.
  • Acid greens like Resene Karma are tangy and edgy, they go well with charcoal and green-based creams, and even palest icy blue.
  • Pale and interesting greens, soft sages and apples, like Resene Pale Leaf, are restful colours which are perfect in bedrooms and look amazing with a natural scheme of pale timbers: there’s no finer way to exude eco-chic.
  • Emeralds and jades, like Resene Deep Sea, are strong, rich colours have an edge of decadence and eastern mysticism.
  • Swampy colours like Resene Paddock and other dark, sludgy greens suit heritage decors that feature dark antiques, brocades and leather.

Kitchen

Art Green wanted to update his old kitchen, as well as let more light into the space. He was inspired by the tones and hues of the French farmhouse style, so borrowed elements of that when deciding on his new Resene colour scheme. Along with the old grey benchtops, which Art transformed with Resene Alabaster, he gave the tired cabinetry a major lift with Resene Green Spring. This has elevated this space significantly and provided an uplifting breath of fresh air with the subtle natural tones.

Ensuite

This ensuite is a masterclass in using tones of green to create a decadently inviting, spa-like atmosphere with a modern twist. Green tiles are the focal point, and they’ve been paired with Resene Vantage Point, a smoky green. These tones have been complemented with more neutral Resene Cashmere and Resene Quarter Tea to ensure the green isn’t too overwhelming. The ceiling was painted in Resene Ravine, a dry, cloudy green that creates an inviting ambiance and makes a change from white ceilings. It’s a fantastic example of using bold greens to create a major impact in a small space.

Lounge

This lounge has been transformed with Resene Cabbage Ponta muted, shadowy green that works beautifully in both character and contemporary homes. The fireplace’s dated tiles have been elevated even further with Resene Sandtex Mediterranean effect, which gives an authentic, textured finish and brings out the depth of the Resene Cabbage Pont.

Guest bathroom

In this guest bathroom, wallpaper has been used to bring the green energy. The design is part of the Resene Golden Age Wallpaper Collection and is a modern take on classic Art Deco glamour. The mint green panels of this design get a touch of elegance with gold edges, with the green hue also a lovely nod to the mature trees framed by the window.
