6 ways to make an impact with Resene wallpaper

Wallpaper is making a major comeback in the homes of design-forward interior DIYers, with the extraordinary range of Resene wallpapers adding depth, texture and tone to a room with remarkable ease.

Thanks to modern paste-the-wall wallpapers, the hanging process itself is far easier than it has been in the past, which is another reason to give it a go at your place. Check out MasterStroke’s full guide on tips, how to hang and how to strip old wallpaper before you start, so you’ll be confident and know exactly what to expect.

Not sure? Start in a small space, like your powder room. It’s a low commitment way to test the water and experiment with a bolder print you’d perhaps use in a larger space.

When it comes to choosing a design, your best bet is to head into your local Resene ColorShop, where you can flip through their wallpaper collections. The friendly staff are always available to sit down and help you decide on options that will suit the atmosphere and colours already in your home. They’ll also provide you with samples to take home so you can get a true indication of how the print and colourway will look in your space. Wallpaper samples are best viewed in person to appreciate the colour, texture and the way the design catches the light.

The habitat plus – wallpaper guide is another fantastic tool for inspiration – you can collect a copy from your local Resene ColorShop or read it online. This handy guide provides advice on how to choose wallpaper, the types available and how to hang it. It also showcases current trends, including botanical prints, florals, metallic finishes, graphic prints, oversize designs and murals, the classics, fun looks and personalised art prints.

Eric Murray’s powder room

If you’re looking to experiment with some colour, depth and texture in your home, Resene experts often suggest starting with your powder room as a low commitment, low risk, relatively simple way to do so. Kiwi rowing legend Eric Murray and his partner Thea decided to go “a little bit wild” in their powder room, with Thea’s love of animals and animal print leading them to select jungle-themed Resene Change is Good Wallpaper Collection 37990-01. They also chose to paint the back wall and ceiling in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen in Resene Hemlock to create a moody, dramatic atmosphere in the space.

That 70s Reno: Parental Pad master bedroom

Alice’s Pearson is not afraid of colour and her inspired use of Resene wallpaper is a key feature in their family home. She brought the same textured impact into the Parental Pad that her and Caleb renovated on their property. Alice and her dad wallpapered the main bedroom with Resene Summer Wallpaper Collection SUM405. “It had these really beautiful tones and patterns that were inspired by summer and living by the beach – it just felt like the perfect fit,” she says.

That 70s Reno: Brooke’s Room

Alice and Caleb also transformed all four of their children’s rooms with Resene paint and wallpaper, but perhaps the most fun is three-year-old Brooke’s room, which has become a true animal kingdom. “She’s wild about animals, colour and adventure and wants all of that in her room,” says Alice. So the couple chose a vibrant jungle mural Resene Club Botanique Wallpaper Collection 539172 and Resene African Queen Wallpaper Collection 751321 textured finish, a bit like crocodile skin, for the walls.

Demo to Reno: Zeph’s bedroom

As part of their major home renovation. Tyge and Christina Dellar sought to transform their son Zeph’s bedroom. Their house has an overall Hampton’s theme and their mission was to help that translate in a young boys room, while still making it a cool and fun space. After looking through the Resene wallpaper sample books, the couple decided on Resene Golden Age Wallpaper Collection 101070621 as Zeph will be able to grow into the timeless stripes and they’ll be “still cool when he’s a teenager,” she says.

Another element of Tyge and Christina’s renovation was their dining room and as they love to entertain, they wanted it to be special, with a good amount of style and oomph. Christina was very keen on a Hampton’s-esque look and as it was only going to be used on half the wall, felt confident selecting Resene Eden Wallpaper Collection M37311 – part of the collection inspired by the flora of the Garden of Eden.

The Current Place: Art room ceiling

Damien Nikora and Chanelle Taylor have been renovating a 400sqm woolshed, transforming it into a modern living and working space. One of the most recent areas they’ve completed is Chanelle’s art room – a light-filled space with fence paling walls painted in Resene Double Parchment and trims and ceiling beams stained with Resene Colorwood in Bark for contrast.

The couple decided to add some drama to the ceiling, using Resene Fashion for Walls Wallpaper Collection 10371-19 between the wooden beams. Using this leafy print on the ceiling is a great way to make an impact without overpowering the space.
