The importance of reading product labels over a cuppa

No matter the size of your painting job, to get the best results you need to be properly prepared before you begin. As well as assembling the right equipment, it’s imperative to get up to speed with exactly how to use it all correctly.

Resene paint expert Murdo Shaw shares the importance of reading the product labels before beginning your DIY project. This way you can avoid any unexpected issues and save yourself time and effort. “A lot of people don’t read the instruction labels,” says Murdo. “Taking this valuable time at the beginning will clear your head and help you focus on your project in the best way possible, so you can get the job done right the first time.”

Double check

Resene’s highly detailed product labels include everything you need to know, from start to finish, so be sure to allocate enough time to take a load off and brief yourself before you pick up a brush. Murdo says, “I can’t stress this enough, the most important thing to do first is to have a cup of tea and a biscuit. Sit down, relax and read the labels of the paints, primers and wood stains you’re planning to use before you start.”

If you read the label and you’re still not quite sure what product is right for your project or how to use it, use the free Resene ‘Ask a Paint Expert’ service to get extra advice or ask the staff at your local Resene ColorShop.

Resene product labels

As well as the obvious safety precautions, the labels give you valuable information about each product, including how to use them, the best roller and paintbrushes to use, how to clean this equipment and vital things to avoid. If you find it too tricky to read the small print or paint has dripped all over your cans, Resene conveniently has labels for all their products online, so you can read all the information on your device instead.

Deciphering the labels

The Quick Check panel gives a thorough breakdown and answers all the key questions you’ll most likely have. It includes where to use the product, its gloss level and key coverage information, which will help you to work out exactly how much you’ll require. Also included is the dry time, recoat time and how many coats you need, so you’re able to plan out your day and manage your time properly. The application method means you’re able to select the correct tools for the job and ensure your finish looks its best, whether it’s a brush, speed brush, roller or spray.

The rest of the label goes into detail with instructions on how to use the product, broken down into key tips and points to note. For example, the label for Resene Lustacryl incorporates sections on preparation, priming, topcoat and even how to manage painting wet areas like bathrooms.

Product data sheets

Each Resene product also comes with a data sheet that breaks down the technical and practical information, which includes typical uses, physical properties, performance and limitations, preparation and application. You can check these out online too – simply scan the QR code on the back of your product to be directed to the relevant data sheet or click here.

Other considerations

While you’re enjoying your cuppa and pre-painting planning session, there are a few other things you might want to consider.

  • Do you have the appropriate safety gear?
It’s worth investing in some essential items to protect yourself properly. Overalls, gloves and shoe protectors will ensure your good clothes and hands won’t get stained, and a mask will help protect you when you are sanding or removing old paint. Eye protection is also a must if you are painting a ceiling to prevent paint getting in your eyes ‒ and a cap or hat will stop you getting paint drips in your hair. When you’re painting outside, remember to wear sunglasses as fresh paint, especially light colours, can be glary, and ear protection is also good if you’re doing any sort of sanding or using power tools.
  • Where will you store any leftover paint?
Resene paint can last for years with the correct storage and care and is ideal to have stored away for touch ups down the track. Firstly, always make sure the can is sealed properly and then place it somewhere out of direct sunlight and that sits around 15-20°C. It’s best not to store paints directly on a concrete floor as big temperature changes can affect the paint quite quickly, so pop it on a shelf away from any sharp objects.
  • Check the weather
Choose a warm, dry day to get the best and speediest finish. Avoid 30+ scorchers though – if it’s too hot the paint can dry too fast and it’s harder to get a smooth finish. You can add Resene Hot Weather Additive to slow the paint drying and give you more time to get a good result. At the other end of the spectrum, anything below 10°C and the paint will dry slower, so you’ll need to consider using Resene Wintergrade Additive and allowing more dry time.
