Artist Jun Arita’s bright, bold, pop art-style pieces are inspired by his Japanese heritage and his adopted home of Aotearoa, as well as bringing joy and happiness to others.
“I’m deeply influenced by my surroundings, the people I meet and the journey I’m on. My art is a reflection of that, focused on positivity, joy and creating a sense of connection,” he shares. “My artwork often features Japanese kanji characters, traditional symbols, elements of Japanese culture and my original characters. I also draw inspiration from everyday life – whatever catches my eye or sparks an idea.
“I love using lots of colour because it makes me happy and brings a smile to my face. Through my art, I want to share that same happiness and positive energy with others, while also inspiring curiosity and appreciation for Japanese culture.”
Jun uses Resene testpots to bring the colourful energy, and the huge variety of hues is his secret weapon.
“I love the wide range of colours Resene offers. I use Resene testpots because they have great colours, they’re smooth, easy to carry for mural work and they suit my colourful style perfectly.”
Even as a child, Arita could be found drawing and colouring inside instead of playing outside, and he’s harnessed that same creative passion in his artistic career later in life, which he balances with being an international flight attendant for Air New Zealand.
He has worked on various mural projects in New Zealand and Japan, frequently participates in live painting events, collaborating with global brands such as Red Bull and Suntory Boss Coffee. His art has been exhibited in Japan, the Netherlands and New Zealand.
